TISH HAUTEA
This Fruit follows the 12 Rules
The work explores a childhood memory about a special fruit, called Aratilis,
that can only be eaten straight from a tree in the Philippines.
I also included a personal work titled "Banig"
The piece is a reduction woodcut print of a Banig, which is a Tagalog word for woven mat.
The banig is a symbol of community where people gather together
to eat, drink and share stories.
The wooden plank that was used to create the print was cut into puzzle pieces
where the audience is invited to put the pieces together.
The Collective Collective is an experimental group of six artists whose practice centres on collaboration and play. We came together through friendship and a shared love of games, puzzles and problem-solving. Whether cracking an escape room, making sculptures against the clock, or climbing a bouldering wall, the things we do together shape how we think and work.
For this exhibition, each artist contributed two rules, creating a set of twelve that everyone was required to follow. Assignment considers how constraints can generate unexpected possibilities and how rules can be followed, stretched, subverted and negotiated. Alongside these rule-bound works, several artists have also contributed works that respond more broadly to the exhibition’s themes.
